We here at Luke Records don't really care what the music business has to say about us. However, there are a few things Uncle Luke thought you should know.
Luke Records: A Really Brief Oral History
"If it wasn't for 2 Live Crew videos wouldn't look like they do and rappers wouldn't sound like they do."
"I was one of the first people to start my own record label as well as being an artist, and the first to make it more like a crew type thing, as in me as an artist putting my other boys on. Nobody was doing that at the time; there was no Bad Boy or No Limit. You never had an artist owning a record company putting his other artists on independently. At the end of the day, that’s what I would want my legacy to be, more like an artist/businessman to start this whole era."
We know imitation is the highest form of flattery, so to all those artists and executives who have become successful using the formula we created back in 1986; Luke Records would like to say “you’re welcome.” And after all these years, we still continue to produce and distribute some of the hottest names in hip- hop and R&B like 2 Live Crew, H-Town, Pitbull and Trick Daddy. We’re proud of the positive impact we’ve had on hip-hop and the music community, but Luke Records always has and always will be about staying one step ahead of convention.
The music business is rapidly changing. CD sales plummet as iPod penetration increases. Digital media is taking over, and before you know it, even the biggest commercial artists won't care about MTV or the major labels, never mind corporate radio. The digital age now allows independent artists and labels to make a significant impact. So in this new phase of the music business, who better than Luke Records (which was established to get talented artists ignored by major labels a chance to be heard), to once again show the rest of the industry how it’s done?
